Trapping Ships
As far as ships go, competitors are as a rule only going to build ship services to oil rigs. Now when you buy land, nothing can affect it whatsoever, even mother nature. This means it is possible to clear water, then buy it up. This means it will not flood. However, this is all so expensive, only the fanatics would consider it:
Note: There is a cheaper way of doing this: you can build ship depots all the way round an oil rig. However the drawback is that it might not quite fit and it generally less flexible because you have to do it in two square chunks. Also you have to pay for the extra depots each year (under property maintainance in the finance window):
