One important thing to remember with building railways is to ensure that they remain as straight and level as possible. If you take a look below at a landscape:
The best way to build through here is to carve out the lanscape in order to build the railway, like so:
The railway then remains straight and level. This can be expensive, although once you have got a few other services going bringing in cash, you should be able to afford it. It is worth it, because it allows trains to travel at their maximum quoted speed for the whole journey, and in transport tycoon, speed is everything. Fast efficient services will bring in the cash very quickly, so well worth the initial expense. However, at the beginning of the game when you first start out it is important not to spend too much money on the route, equally, if your first transport services are slow and inefficient it will be very difficult to recover. The best advice in the beginning is to look for industries that can be linked that have reasonably flat land in between them. Also take advantage of natures contours. Remember too that it is better to have a curving track than it is to have a track that goes up and down hills.
